Three generations of Brooklyn BBQ

Royal Rib House started in the 1960s, when North Carolina native Calvin Grier went looking for the right Brooklyn storefront to serve real soul food. For fifty years the Halsey Street spot fed Bed-Stuy — ribs slathered in the house slow-brewed BBQ sauce, rotisserie chicken, collard greens, and a line out the door.

After closing in 2019, the family — Calvin's daughter Carole and grandson Jason Barnett — brought it home in 2022, right around the corner on Malcolm X Blvd between Halsey and Hancock. Same sauce, same pit, same neighborhood. The sauce got so popular it made its way onto local grocery shelves.
